While there is still a ton of research to be done on the effects of CBD on sleep, it’s one of the most common concerns our customers find products to help improve. How does CBD help you sleep?
Anxiety and racing thoughts, an unbalanced sleep-wake cycle, and chronic pain can all result in an overall feeling of grogginess and fatigue, and that doesn’t even scratch the surface on more debilitating sleep disorders like insomnia. So, where does CBD come in?
CBD works by interacting with our bodies’ endocannabinoid system and its receptors. Our endocannabinoid system plays a role in maintaining body functions like regulating appetite, sleep, and circadian rhythm. When CBD interacts with these receptors, it can aid with irregular sleeping cycles and generally poor sleep quality by easing anxiety, increasing overall sleep duration, and lowering pain levels for people that experience insomnia due to chronic illness. In this way, CBD can actually help you get a better sleep in a multitude of areas that may be holding you back from peacefully dozing off. CBD can also play a factor by improving alertness and reducing daytime fatigue, which has an effect on the quality and consistency of your overall sleep-wake cycle.
Does CBD help with insomnia and REM sleep disorders?
If you’ve struggled with insomnia, you are probably side eyeing us big time, and we get it! For every study done backing the credentials of CBD, there is also a friend that once tried a tincture from a questionable source, didn’t notice results, and now firmly declares it to all be snake oil. There is still so much more to learn about CBD, but research indicates that, cortisol (one of the main stress hormones) typically experiences peak levels in the morning, but people with insomnia may have increased cortisol levels at night. Additionally, nighttime stress is associated with an increased number of nighttime awakenings. In one study on the effects of CBD, a high concentration CBD oil was found to significantly decrease cortisol levels which can act as a natural sedative.
CBD has even been shown to aid in REM behavior disorders in people with Parkinson’s disease. REM behavior disorder is a condition that causes people to react physically during REM sleep, which can lead to disruptive sleep, or injury to self and others. According to this NCBI study journal “patients treated with CBD had prompt and substantial reduction in the frequency of [REM Sleep Behavior Disorder] RBD-related events without side effects.” This really just goes to show that we have only scratched the surfaced of the intricacies of CBD’s effect on our brains.

Is CBD better than my current sleep aid?
The short answer — It really depends. For individuals that experience chronic insomnia or have a prescription sleep medication, we recommend taking CBD as a compliment to your current routine, not a replacement. As always — we also recommend speaking to a medical health professional before treating or diagnosing any illness. If you experience lack of sleep due to pain, anxiety, or overall restlessness then consistently taking CBD like myself may be right for you.
What are the best methods of taking CBD in order to help me sleep?
There are a few different ways you can take CBD to help target sleep related issues. For more progressed sleep disorders, we suggest a high concentration tincture (especially if you’re experienced with CBD). Due to the way tinctures are made, they are typically the most highly concentrated CBD products available and the dosage can easily be adjusted to suit your needs. For the CBD curious with a low tolerance, you might like experimenting with CBD edibles as the dosage tends to be milder! There are even CBD gummies with melatonin, formulated specifically for sleep. For those concerned with an exact dosage — we would recommend capsules. However, when taking capsules or edibles, remember these forms take longer to absorb than a tincture, vape, or nasal spray, so they work best when taken an hour or so before bed.
There is still much to learn about how CBD directly effects our sleep cycle, but a non-habit forming, non-psychoactive alternative to prescription sedatives with little to no side effects sounds like a worthy pursuit to us. Whether you experience temporary bouts of sleeplessness, daily fatigue, or long-term insomnia, we think there is enough research to suggest CBD is a worthy adversary for whatever may be keeping you from getting the rest you need.
